I am experiencing a problem with Desktop Themes under Windows 98. I downloaded two themes from a web page. I tried one, and it worked fine. I then reverted to the Windows default settings and shut the system down. The next day I tried the other theme and received the following error message, which now appears whenever I try to load any theme including the default: 'THEMES caused an invalid page fault in module at 0000:0193fb00'. Can you help me avoid having to delete and reinstall Windows?

I hope so. This error seems to be caused by a bug in the version of themes.exe you have (possibly distributed in the themes you downloaded). This causes the Default Icon Registry key to go missing or become damaged.
There are two possible solutions. The simplest is to obtain the latest version of the themes.exe file. To do this, use Windows Update on the Start menu to download and install any of the themes on the Windows Update site.
The second solution involves editing the Registry, so we would advise you to take backup precautions before you start. See tip Back up the Registry. Open the Registry Editor, then expand the following Registry folders in turn: Hkey_Current_User, Software, Classes, CLSID, {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}. Select Default Icon and delete it. You should now be able to install a new desktop theme.
